Hello all i am Beau, I live near Destin Fl in the western panhandle. I have a 1993 Duffy 21 that looks new. After many years my battery charger backed it in. I replace it with same charger and hoped for the best. No luck. I am working the issue however I worry my two banks of 6 volt batteries will be lost while I try to get this fixed. I found an inexpensive 36 volt charger on Amazon with the same type of plug as my Duffy. Want to use it to keep my batteries happy while saving over $3,000 in replacement cost. Will I destroy the system?
MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY.
Hello, Beau ----- a little more information may help answer your questions. How do you know that your battery charger has failed? Do you have a 48V or 36V system (in other words, 8 or 6 6V batteries)? How old are the batteries, and are you sure they are good? Have you checked the specific gravity of the cells?
Good luck,
Rob (an IE Grad)
BTW, here's a link to the charger that's installed in my 2010 M160 Duffy (48V system): Delta-Q QuiQ On-Board 48V Battery Charger 912-4800 (evdrives.com)
You can probably find this from another supplier, but my guess is that it's not easy to find and won't be much cheaper. Note that it's also necessary to "program" the charger to a certain battery profile, so whoever sells it needs to do that before sending it to you.
Good luck,
Rob
Called Duffy tech support, talked to Charlie, good guy and appears knowledgeable. He said the golf cart charger would work on my dual bank but slower. On single bank no problem at all. Plugged right in and started working. Watching like hawk. Thx to Rob ran the hydrometer test today and will run again in morning. nothing in fail range but some had slightly over 30 difference. Will see what it looks like in the morning. Got the charger on Amazon for $175. Just plugs right in, if it lasts it wii be a great find.
